Enter The Lord of the Rings A The Beautiful, Mysterious and Middle-Earth
Lord of the Rings Three rings for the Elven kings under the sky, Seven for the Dwarf lords in their halls of stone, Nine for mortal Men doomed to die, One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne, In the land of Mordor where the shadows lie. One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
The Lord of the Rings (Trilogy) is the most successful action-packed fantasy movie that has ever come out on the big screen. The Lord of the Rings is actually an adaptation of the epic fantasy novel originally written by J.R.R. Tolkien during World War II and although the book was written in three stages, the film trilogy was shot simultaneously and it was then edited and released into three separate films. All three films share the main title "The Lord of the Rings" but each was subtitled into the following: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. The story takes place in the Third Age period in a land called Middle Earth which, of course, was created somewhere in between Tolkien's colorful imagination. The Lord of the Rings main plot is centered on the magical "One Ring" created from the pits of Mount Doom by the evil wizard Dark Lord Sauron, whose sole purpose was to rule all of Middle Earth. Although the leaders of Elves, Dwarves and Men each have their respective "Rings of Power", this "One Ring" was exclusively made to rule them all. To that effect, it renders all of the other rings useless since Sauron's ring was more powerful than all the rest combined.
So what's so special about this ring? Well, for starters it has dark magical powers far more superior than those of the other "Rings of Power". With this power, the holder of the One Ring has the ability to dominate all the other rings and manipulate the individuals who wear them. But the Elves were an exception to all this, for it was revealed that the rings given to them was not tainted by Sauron's evil. Also when the bearer of the ring wears it, he disappears from sight.
Handy for pranks and stuff but the presence the ring becomes a magnet for the attention of the sinister Ringwraiths when worn, as they can sense its pwer and dark forces when used. The Ringwraiths are the nine immortal men described that have become enslaved by the one rings power and evil and have become gothic looking shadow slaves of the Dark Lord Sauron. The One Ring also has the power to prolong the life of whoever has possession of it, as evidenced by the longevity of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins and the once-hobbit-turned-psycho Gollum/Sm??agol. But there is a price to pay for hanging on to the ring for too long and using its power as the Gollum / Smeaagol character can attest. For The One Ring actually consumes the spirit of whoever holds it, taking out their innocence and bringing out the evil in them. The power and forces of the ring seduce, corrupt and takes control of those who hold it until such time that it is returned to its creator Sauron. Co-written/produced and directed by the now well-known Peter Jackson, The Lord of the Rings was shot in its entire totality in the scenic and captivating country of New Zealand, except for the digital special effects that is.
The location was a perfect backdrop for the mystical and mythological nature of the movie. As for the total production cost for the entire project, it was a whooping $280 million and it took eight long years to complete the project! People the world over have since come to know and love the main characters of the movie, Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin who are all Hobbits. Hobbits, as they are known, are small people with hairy, grimy feet and pointed ears much like the Elves; but without the magical powers are the heroes of the LOTR trilogy, walking barefoot all the way to the land of Mordor and sending the One Ring to the fiery depths of Mount Doom, the ring's place of origin and the only place where it can be destroyed. But along the way "The Fellowship of the Ring" is formed. This group, supervised by the good old wizard Gandalf, represents each tribe living in Middle Earth: Legolas of the Elven realm, Gimli of the Dwarves, then Boromir and Aragorn from the kingdom of Men, to guide and protect the Hobbits from the dark lord's evil minions such as the Orcs and the Ringwraiths who follow in hot pursuit to reclaim the One Ring for their master. The Fellowship's expedition takes them to places which only a flight of the imagination can summon: from mystical forests to barren landscapes, across plains and mountains. The Fellowship is greatly aided by the Elven kingdom, the beautiful Arwen in particular, in their quest to destroy the One Ring and thus prevent the impending return of the Dark Lord Sauron. The Lord of the Rings was indeed the most ambitious and by far the largest movie venture ever undertaken.
But then the three films paid its dividends when The Lord of the Rings trilogy grossed a mind-boggling total of $2.91 BILLION worldwide thereby making it the highest grossing film trilogy of all time. Not even the original or prequel Star Wars trilogy or The Matrix franchise comes close to that! With this said, there is, without a doubt NOT another film trilogy ON the horizon that can ever surpass, equal or at least even come close to the success that The Lord of the Rings has achieved. Not in this lifetime anyway. So be prepared, and enter the world of Middle-Earth!
