In the third installment of the prequel trilogy, Revenge of the Sith, General Grievious and Count Dooku kidnap Chancellor Palpatine in an effort to take over the empire. But Grievious' story begins far before this depiction, starting with his military training as a warlord in his homeworld of Kalee. The Kaleesh had been fighting a war against Huk invaders, and were in need of a warrior who could defeat them and free their people.
During his Kaleesh years, Grievious was known as Qymaen jai Sheelal. One of his best friends during this time was a woman warrior by the name of Ronderu lij Kummar. The two were able to defeat hundreds of Huk while together, earning them both the title of demigods. But when Kummar was killed in battle, Sheelal felt destined to sorrow for the remainder of his life, thus adopting the name of General Grievious.
It would appear that Grievious' bad fortune would continue, as after a shuttle crash, he was forced to have his brain and nervous system put into a cybernetic operating system - ala Robocop. General Grievious soon earned the position of Supreme Commander of the Droid Army (though he would argue to death with anyone attempting to pin him with robotic roots).
General Grievious lead the Confederate Droid Army to defeat the Republic numerous times. His new technology allowed him to control the entire army at once using his antennae on top of his head. During this time, Grievious also became responsible for the death of billions, relentlessly making his enemies choose between saving the lives of innocent civilians or winning the battle.
Grievious was also highly training in lightsaber combat. He even taught Darth Tyranus the art and managed to kill many Jedi Knights in battle. Having accomplished this, Grievious chose to wield the lightsabers of his four most powerful opponents as trophies, and was successful in developing his own form of lightsaber combat - a lightning-fast blur of lightsaber movement using all of his six limbs at once.
Interestingly enough, it is said that Grievious' armor was a prototype for Darth Vaders. This can been seen by the when relating the uncontrollable coughing done by Sheelal throughout Revenge of the Sith with the difficult breathing of Anakin in the original Star Wars Trilogy.
