Can The St Louis Cardinals Dominate The League?

The St Louis Cardinals were established in 1882 under owner Chris Von Der Ahe a versatile entrepreneur and baseball enthusiast.

The Cardinals were initially named ‘Brown Stockings’ and were part of American Association till they joined the National League in 1892.

The Browns were four times American Association pennant winners consecutively for the years 1885, 1886, 1887 and 1888.

Their homeground was Sportsman Park at this time.

Frank and Stanley Robinson purchased the St Louis Cardinals, then called the Brown Stockings from the troubled Chris Von Der Ahe in 1898. The team park was renamed League Park and the Brown Stockings were named the Perfectos for a brief period till 1900. After a sportswriter overheard a fan appreciating the new uniform colors as a lovely shade of cardinals, the nickname ‘cardinals’ was liked and accepted by the team.

The St Louis Cardinals started the 1900’s with 65- 75 record and 4th position by the end of 1901 season. The League Park was renamed Robinson Park in 1911 by Mrs. Helen H Britton, in memory of her father and uncle; Frank and Stanley Robinson. In 1916 Mrs. Britton sold her shares of the Cardinals to Sam Breadon and James C Jones.

The 1920’s started well for St Louis Cardinals with 87-66 record and 3rd position by the end of 1921 season. The Cardinals were in good form as Roger Hornsby became the first Triple Crown winner from the Redbirds for the years 1922 and 1925. With Branch Rickey at the front office and Hornsby as the team manger the Cardinals were a prosperous team with great players.

The first National League pennant and World Series championship came in 1926 to the Cardinals; Grover Alexander was largely accredited for the wins. The next National League pennants came in 1928 and 1930 with players like Jim Bottomley, young Jay Hanna, famous Dizzy Dean and Jesse Haines.

The 1930’s started even better when the St Louis Cardinals were World Series title holders for years 1931 and 1934.

In 1937 Joe Medwick became the last National League player to date to win the Triple Crown with .347 batting average, 154 RBI and 31 home runs.

The Cardinals dominated the diamond in the 1940’s. They were the National League pennant winners for four years and World Series title holders for three years. Throughout the decade from 1940 to 1949 the Cardinals remained in the top three position, their best being 1942 with 106-48 record being on top of the list.

St Louis Cardinals played their first night game on 4 June 1940. The players accredited for the wins were Stan Musial (National League MVP 1943, 1946 & 1948), Mort Cooper (National League MVP 1942), Enos Slaughter (great hitter) and Whitey Kurowski (third baseman).

After a brief ownership Fred Saigh sold the Cardinals to August A Busch Jr. on 20 Feb 1953. The Cardinals ballpark after negotiations from owner Bill Veeck was purchased, renovated and named Busch Stadium. The 50’s proved to be mediocre for the Cardinals with Musial’s achieving his 3000th hit on 13 May 1958.

The 1960’s started on a better note with Cardinals having 86-68 record and in 3rd position on the board by the end of 1960 season. The Cardinals were back on their winning streak in the 60’s with three national League pennant and two World Series titles throughout the decade.

The 1964 World Series was the most exciting of the two with St Louis Cardinals finally defeating tough contenders the Yankees to a 4-3 record. The Cardinals had some great players on their 60’s team like the legendary Lou Brock, Bob Gibson (National League MVP 1968, Cy Young Award), Tim Mc Carver (power hitter), and Ken Boyer.

The Cardinals maintained their good performance in the 1970’s with Joe Torre (National League MVP 1971), with Lou Brock becoming the second Major Leaguer with 118 stolen bases in 1974, John Denny at age 23 became the youngest player to win National League ERA title in 1976 and Garry Templeton hit 200 homers in a season made him the youngest player to achieve this feat. Instead of great all star players the team was not able to capture any title till the 80’s.

The St Louis Cardinals became the World Series title holders in 1982 under manager Whitey Herzog and also accredited for the win rookie Willie Mc Gee (MVP & Gold Glove winner). Cardinals also won three National League pennants throughout the decade. The team boasted great player like Joe Morgan, Ozzie Smith, Todd Worrell and Vince Coleman.

The 90’s was a period of change for the Cardinals. They had new owners Fred Hanser, Drew Bour and William DeWitt Jr. in 1995; the team also had change of managers from Joe Torre in 1990 to Mike J in 1995 and finally Tonny La Russa in 1996. The team became stable with Russa’s guidance and had 88-74 record and 1st position by the end of 1996 season.

In the new millennia the Cardinals were on the 1st position with 95-67 record by the end of 2000 season. The St. Louis Cardinals had above 90 wins after 12 years and they continued to better themselves on the score board and reached 105-57 record in 2004. The Cardinals remained in the top three till 2007 season, with two National League pennants and a World Series title for the year 2006 against the Tigers.

The present Cardinals are a promising team with All-Star players like Albert Pujols, Chris Carpenter, Jim Edmonds, Jeff Weaver and David Eckstein. The Redbirds are a great Major League team that has proved its potential time and again on the diamond.
