HELPING YOU TAKE CARE OF YOUR FIGURE(S)!
Battlestar Galactica - The Reimagined Series, Do You Love It Or Hate It?
To be completely honest I had shied away from watching the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica for a long time, mainly because of my fond memories of the original Battlestar Galactica series and because, living in Thailand, its not readily available, however a few weeks ago a friend of mine lent me his DVDs and since then I have become a big fan of the series (better late than never, hey!).
What do I like most about it?
The story lines are excellent and the human interactions are well portrayed.
One of the most important factors, for me, is that it remains close to the original concept and despite the changes it "feels" like "Battlestar Galactica".
Rather than being a poor re-make it is an excellent tribute to the original and as such I am looking forward to the Sci-Fi channels re-imagined "V" series (anybody else remember that one?).
So, this receives a huge thumbs up from me, and for those of you wondering exactly what it's all about, read on...
Battlestar Galactica, the re-imagined series, is a television program created by Ronald D. Moore which follows the storyline of the original Battlestar Galactica mini-series of 1978.
This rendition has garnered a wide range of commendation which includes several Emmy nominations for creative works, writing and directing.
The show follows the journey of the last surviving humans from the Twelve Colonies of Kobol after its annihilation by the Cylons.
Unlike most science fiction series, Battlestar Galactica doesn't feature aliens and intentionally avoids techie phrases or lingo in order for the mainstream audience to fully appreciate the show's storyline.
It deals mostly with the apocalyptic fall-out of the destruction of mankind's twelve colonies and of the remaining survivors as well as the moral choices they must make in dealing with the continued existence of the human race.
They face that entire dilemma while evading the Cylons who are constantly in pursuit after them.
Battlestar Galactica SEASON 1:
The show takes off after the Cylons' genocidal attack on the Twelve Colonies. A rag tag fleet aboard the Battlestar Galactica, an old but powerful warship, was able to escape the annihilation and must now tackle the problems of survival while fleeing from the enemy. The human survivors are now led by President Laura Roslin and the gutsy Commander William Adama. Now pursued by Cylons intent on wiping out the remnants of the human race, the survivors travel across the galaxy looking for the fabled and long-lost thirteenth colony- Earth.
Battlestar Galactica SEASON 2:
Picking up where last season's cliffhanger finale left off, the Galactica crew discovers a habitable planet, but things become even further complicated when the Cylons, led by Caprica Six and Sharon, find the planet and offer humanity a stunning proposal of peace. Following the discovery of Kobol, the arrest of Laura Roslin, and the attempted assassination of William Adama, Colonel Tigh commands the Fleet while Adama is incapacitated, instituting martial law. The Fleet finds itself thrust into more peril when it divides into two factions: one which supports Adama, and one which supports Roslin and Zarek. But with the discovery of Pegasus and New Caprica, they also found hope. Yet, all prospects of a better future are squashed in a fateful twist of events.
Battlestar Galactica SEASON 3:
On New Caprica, a Cylon occupation is in full swing. Gaius Baltar grudgingly conspires with the Cylons and becomes head of the colonial government although he was reduced to the role of a "puppet leader". The stranded Colonials struggle to survive under the brutal Cylon rule of New Caprica and the oppression rouses a resistance led by Colonel Tigh. This small force of mutineers has but one objective and that is of disrupting the Cylon occupation force. All the while the battlestars Galactica and Pegasus were at a safe distance from New Caprica and returned to rescue the stranded colonists. The fledgling Fleet then resumes its search for Earth while the Cylons, after losing control on New Caprica, depart on their own mysterious quest for Earth.
Battlestar Galactica SEASON 4:
This is the final season of the Re-imagined Series which tackles the revelation of the last member of the "Final Five", the mystery surrounding the return of Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, the continuing search for Earth that will likely end in her discovery by the Fleet, and a cult lead by the well-loathed and unwanted Gaius Baltar. In the final episodes, Thrace leads the surviving humans/Cylons to a new planet which Adama names Earth and which is revealed to be the actual planet Earth of present-day humanity. It is shown to have already been inhabited by humans who are genetically compatible with the humans from the Galactica as well as with the rest of the fleet. The Earth of legend is now revealed to have been a different planet entirely which is a nuked out, uninhabited wasteland due to that planet's war with its Cylon creations. It is now revealed that all of the events of the series have been occurring 150,000 years prior to the era of present-day humanity. Now for a little spoiler: the revelation in the series finale is that the show took place more than 150,000 years BEFORE the present which means that this re-imagined Battlestar Galactica was a tale of our ancestors rather than our descendants. The entire group of humans/Cylons then decided to discard all technology and all of their spaceships by flying them into the Sun to start anew.
Battlestar Galactica Central Characters:
Admiral William Adama:
He is, without a doubt, the most charismatic and best character of Battlestar Galactica. Although his decisions are oftentimes purely militaristic and ostracized, deep down he aims to achieve only the best not just for his crew but also for the survivors on the ship. He considers the task to keep humanity alive his personal mission. Adama places a strong value of loyalty to those he regards as family and friends and shows a firm determination that only a handful would dare to question. His innate leadership qualities get him the respect of all crew members and his subordinates aboard the Galactica.
President Laura Roslin:
Due to the series of unfortunate events that befell mankind, President Laura Roslin was thrust into the presidency despite never being elected into office. She suddenly faces the challenge to lead and save what is left of humanity from the Cylons. She was, at first, a staunch opposition to Admiral Adama's decisions but with time both parties started to collaborate for the better good. What's most admirable for this character is that during the entire series, Laura Roslin not only leads the fight against the Cylons but also willed herself on to battle terminal cancer in spite of the highly unusual and stressful circumstances.
Lee "Apollo" Adama:
Leland Joseph Adama, aka Lee Adama or "Apollo", his call sign, is the sole surviving son of William Adama. Lee Adama's relationship with his father has always been a strained one due to the death of his younger brother, Zak. Various attempts at reconciliation have occurred over the following years but even these went to naught as Lee always wanted to step out of his father's shadow. A former Colonial Fleet Reserve officer, Lee went on to become a delegate to the Quorum of Twelve, then on to being the interim President of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol. He is also known for having had romantic relationships with Kara Thrace, Shevon, and Anastasia Dualla, the latter whom he married after the discovery of New Caprica.
Captain Kara "Starbuck" Thrace:
Kara "Starbuck" Thrace is another very complex character in the series and is famous for her romantic escapades. She is the last Commander Air Group (CAG) of Galactica and is a gifted Viper pilot with an attitude that oftentimes stunts her career advancement. But thru Admiral Adama's guidance, Thrace's skills in battle have extended beyond the cockpit which has become a plus for the Fleet. Even though she has been portrayed to have a reckless persona, Starbuck was also revealed to be a deeply spiritual person. She frequently prays (or talks) to the Lords of Kobol, particularly Aphrodite and Artemis in times of need. She has mysteriously vanished in Tanzania on real-world Earth shortly after the Fleet's arrival on the planet.
Colonel Saul Tigh:
Colonel Saul Tigh is the Executive Officer (XO) of Battlestar Galactica and is obviously the right-hand man of Admiral Adama when it comes to day to day operations and even serves as acting commander in the absence of the Admiral. But despite this privilege, Saul Tigh is one who seems to be satisfied with his role within the Fleet and doesn't seek a higher role in the military. This is evident in times of Adama's absence wherein he would reluctantly take up the position as the acting Commanding Officer. Colonel Tigh is a tough but troubled man with a long history of alcoholism. He carries with him a lot of baggage from his past and his real character only comes out during personal conversations with Admiral Adama.
Lieutenant Sharon "Athena" Agathon/Sharon "Boomer" Valerii/Number Eight:
Sharon "Boomer" Valerii is a humanoid Cylon who was initially planted as a "sleeper" agent in the Colonial Fleet. She is unaware of her Cylon nature and serves for two years as Lieutenant Valerii on Galactica where she was assigned as a Raptor pilot. She is the first Cylon in the series to show genuine feelings and later managed to win the trust of President Laura Roslin and Admiral Adama, eventually becoming a trusted crew member of the Galactica. After the Cylon attacks, her primary program repeatedly emerges leading her to carry out unconscious acts of sabotage. She even shot Commander Adama in the chest, wounding him critically. This act of treason led her to be imprisoned and then killed. But her consciousness was downloaded and reborn into another body wherein she soon encountered problems integrating into Cylon society. She eventually became one of the Cylon leaders responsible for the end of the Cylon occupation on the Twelve Colonies and on New Caprica.
Number Six is the Sci-Fi fans' and nerds' dream. This character is awesomely profiled and very complex, due to the different variations of Number Sixes. Oh, not to mention that she is steaming hot! Number Six is a humanoid Cylon who plays several key roles in Cylon society. Stunningly beautiful, sensual, and ruthless, this highly driven Cylon model will do anything to achieve her objective and will show no mercy against all who stand in her way. Six is also the only Cylon model known to have varied appearances and personalities and is easily identified for her platinum blonde hair although she has also been seen with honey blonde and black hair. Her display of complex personalities ranges from being overtly sensual to wide-eyed innocent, and from blindly supporting the attack on the Colonies to desiring peaceful coexistence. But there's not much can we do about it foe women are known to be as fickle as the rain.
Doctor Gaius Baltar is one of the most complex characters of Battlestar Galactica. Although he is a brilliant scientist, his scientific prowess seems strongest in the medical and biological fields. He was the legally elected president of the colonies and his visions and insights resulted in him becoming a well-respected figure for the remnants of humanity. Gaius Baltar is at times hard to like because of the complexity of his persona. His public displays of tantrums, his personal instability, and his desire to be a Cylon makes his character a rather self-centered one. But through all his character flaws, Dr.Baltar has acted selflessly on numerous occasions by saving the fleet multiple times.
