the correct information

These are incorrect.

a "Variant" is when there is another version of the same figure with small differences such as different color jersey, or clean-vs-dirty.

a "chase" figure is a surprise figure that wasn't on the original product list.

For example: Series 7 had a Marshall Faulk chase in a Colts uniform. But the Clinton Portis figure had a regular (blue jersey) and a variant (white jersey)

Many thanks for the comment and correction here but chase figures are usually publicized beforehand, e.g. the recent Babe Ruth super chase in the MLB series, but are generally not considered part of the "base" set.
