The Chicago Cubs: These Cubs Have A Big Bite

The Chicago Cubs originally started off as the Chicago White Stockings following the Red Sox tradition, then they became the Chicago Colts, and the Chicago Orphans but were finally declared as the Chicago Cubs in 1902 after its young and vibrant players.

“Those are the saddest of possible words… Tinkers to Evers to Chance…

A trio of bear Cubs and fleeter than birds… Tinkers to Evers to Chance…

Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble…Making a Giant hit but trouble… Tinkers to Evers to Chance…”

New York Times written by Frankie Pierce…

Written by Frankie Pirce in the New York Times these line sum up a trio of the Chicago Cubs early heroes of the 1900’s.

The team played its first game as the White Sox on 26 April 1870 against the St. Louis Unions, and six years later became members of the National League.

They played their first NL game on 25 April 1876 and won the game 4-0 with Spalding being the team manager and star pitcher of the game. The first owner of the cubs was William A Hulbert.

During its foundation years the teams home field was Union Baseball Grounds, then after the Chicago Fire, the team shifted to the 23rd Street Grounds ballpark and also played at Lakefront Park.

One of the star players of the team was Adrian ‘Cap’ Anson, who stayed with the team for 27 years and became the first baseball player to hit 3000 runs. Adrian was team captain for 19 years, earning the nickname ‘Cap’.

The early 1900’s proved to be one of the best periods for the team. It was during this period that they got the nickname ‘Cubs’, after a local newspaper article and the famous trio Joe Tinkers, Johnny Evers and Frank Chance (both manager and first baseman); they got the famous Cub’s rhyme Tinkers to Evers to Chance…

It is the outstanding performance of the team trio, Tinkers, Evers and Chance, that is credited with The Chicago Cubs first World Series win in 1907, defeating the Tigers 2-0.

The Chicago Cubs also claimed the title the following season when on 14 Oct 1908 they played against the Detroit’s winning 4 to 1.

But it was hardly imagined at the time that this would be the last of the World Series titles won by the Cubs till present.

The next few years brought several changes to the team. Charles Weegham with nine other partners purchased the Cubs from Charles Taft on 20 Jan 1916 and moved them , their new home field at Weegham Park.

This has been their home till present. The Cubs have boasted some great players like Heinie Zimmerman and Zip Zabel under their banner.

In 1920 the Chicago Cubs got a new owner, the famous chewing gum entrepreneur and baseball enthusiast William Wrigley.

The Weegham Park also becomes the Cubs Park and in 1902 it is finally named Wrigley’s Park after its current owner.

The 1932 World Series has become famous for the controversial “called shot” by Babe Ruth, that led to the Cubs defeat.

The Chicago Cubs were inherited by Philip Knight, Wrigley’s son after his demise. P K with Bill Veeks assistance modifies the Wrigley Park and the ballpark gets its famous fixtures, the scoreboard, new bleachers and the ivy. On 28 Sept 1938 Gabby Hartnett hits his famous “Homer in the Gloamin” leading the Cubs to 6-5 win against the Pittsburgh.

The 40’s bring in some interesting incidents for the Cubs. The Chicago Cubs donate their light equipment soon to be installed on the field to the military aid in recognition of the Pearl Harbor bombing tragedy in 1941. Another is a believe it or not incident; with P K Wrigley denying the seats to Billy Siani’s goat and Siani in turn cursing the Cubs. It is still a media favorite; time and again accredit for cubs failure to reach the World Series.

The 50’s were a subdued phase for the team, but they have some great All-Star players on their side like Dick Drott, Alvin Dark, Sam Jones and Sam Sneads famous for hitting the score board with a golf ball.

In the early 60’s P K Wrigley decides to try a different tactic to better the team and experiments with "college of coaches" instead of single team manager, the on field results are negative and it is back to one person guide with Leo Duracher becoming the Cubs manager on 25 Oct 1965.

The 70’s continue to be the same for the Cubs with some key players traded to other teams. William Wrigley inherits the Cubs with the sad demise of his father P K Wrigley. Despite the potential of players like Ron Santo, Ernie Banks, Burt Hooton and Milt Pappas the 70’s prove to be a mediocre period for the Cubs.

The 80’s brought new life to the Chicago Cubs; William sells the Cubs to the Tribune Company for the extensive sum of 20.5 million dollars. The new manager Jim Frey leads the team well. On 25 May 1982 F Jenkins achieves the 3000th strike out record, becoming the 7th player in the baseball history to cross the milestone.

The Cubs make their best effort towards the World Series throughout the 80’s and though successful at NL pennants remain on the outside of the World Series. Wrigley Park gets a much awaited permit for limited night games on 5 Feb 1988.

The 90’s are also memorable for the Cubs star hitter Sammy Sosa who is famous for his back-to-back 60 home run in the late 90’s season. Sammy Sosa also became the only player to hit 60 home runs in a year. The year 1995 marks the 9000th game won by the Cubs, being the only professional team with maximum wins.

The new millennium begins the same way the previous ends, with wins for the Cubs. Sosa continues his performance on the diamond and ends 2001 with 103 hits and slugging percentage of 737. The year 2004 Cubs are an All-Star team with Derek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Sosa and Moises Alou.

Even the great players cannot escape injuries and so it happens for both years 2005-06, the two years see most of the players with on field injuries and instead of great players on the team list Cubs suffer a decline on the scoreboards. The year 2007 saw the Cubs climbing steadily on the score boards with Alfonso Soriano playing for the Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs have an interesting tradition. In the early years with only day games; many fans were unable to attend the games due to work or college. P K Wrigley had a white flag with a ‘W’ on it raised as the sign that the Cubs have won the game for the day. This tradition still continues only with more enthusiasm among the fans. The Cubs still await their victory flag for the World Series championship.
