Sideshows Exclusive 12-Inch Gandalf the Grey Figure
This exclusive Lord of the Rings: Gandalf the Grey 12-Inch Figure by Sideshow Collectibles! is a stunning and accurate representation of Ian McKellen from the Lord of the Rings movies.
Sent by the Istari to help the forces of light in the struggle against the growing power of darkness he is a much trusted and loved ally of the people of Middle-earth.
He takes on the role of Frodo's mentor and guide in his quest to destroy the One Ring, and all goes well until they reach the Mines of Moria where they are confronted by one of Middle-earth's most ancient and powerful beings, the Balrog.
Fleeing from the collosal beast of fire and shadow they come to a vast chasm. Turning to fend off the Balrog with all his might and power Gandalf urges the group to cross.
As the noble wizard launches his attack, beating the Balrog with off with the vast power of his staff, he succeeds in overpowering the Balrog but as the huge beast falls to its certain death at the bottom of the vast chasm he lashes out with his fiery whip and catches him off balance, dragging him down after him.
Frodo and his friends look on as Gandalf plunges to his death, saddened they turn to leave Moria behind them and continu on with their quest.

Gandalf Figure Review
Gandalf the Grey, as usual with Sideshow, is very collector friendly and the figure is quite easily removed and replaced from its packaging without damaging the packaging.
The packaging itself is well designed with excellent photography and a ton of background information on the inside of the flaps.
Then figure itself is quite simply breathtaking even by Sideshows standards. The have managed to perfect Gandalf's look and feel precisely.
Over the years there have been many good Gandalf sculpts by such companies as Gentle Giant and NECA, but this one has to be one of, if not the, best ones.
The head sculpt has been expertly sculpted perfectly portraying the wise yet sorrowful look in his eyes. Tim Miller has chosen a more serene and calmer expression for Gandalf in this sculpt which is a perfect fit to my mind.
One of Sideshows biggest complaints has been the sloppiness of their paintwork on some figures but that is not the case here and hopeful it is evidence that they are making a concerted effort to improve.
A minor gripe I have is Sideshows use of the older style Buck body which seems a little outdated now. However, it does seem that it is been slightly altered to give it more flexibility, but there are still a lot better types of bodies that could've been used.
Overall his articulation is acceptable as Gandalf, being a fairly bold man, doesn't really need a great deal of articulation.
Another problem here, and this seems to be becoming a regular complaint, is that many of the joints are too loose.
The costume is excellent, well made, good quality material with some intricate designs and details on.
His boots and hat however are sculpted rather than being made from material, and this was probably a wise decision.
He also comes with two robes. The first is his standard grey cloak which has a hood. It also has a fine wire round the edge to make it easier for posing with as the ties at the front are rather fidgety. His second robe is a poncho style robe which I don't remember seeing in the movies.
His two staffs are also very well made and have a great wood like sculpt and paintwork. The darker staff comes with t has the crystal placed in the top whereas the lighter staff has a tobacco pouch for his pipe.
He also comes with alternate hands that are designed for the pipe and smaller objects and his right hand has an open pose. These are surprisingly easy to swap and replace as well.
Another useful accessory is his haversack, which again is well made and is useful for holding the smaller items as well as looking good on him.
Finally we have his scabbard and Glamdring. His sword is another good sculpt but the paintwork is lacking in "realism" but it fits nicely into Gandalf's scabbard which is held on by two belts which have fairly nice buckles which are easily put on and taken off.
The exclusive version of the figure comes with Balin's Journal as an extra.
All in all this is a great figure and an excellent reproduction of Gandalf, however he isn't very posable and so is more suited to displaying than "play".
Mind you saying that I would imagine the price would make him prohibitively expense for playing with.
I didn't have any issues. You might want to pay attention to how the pipe fits in the staff, so that when you replace it you don't have any trouble, but otherwise everything is sturdy and easy to work with.
Despite the few minor niggles this is one of Sideshows better figures this year, for his price tag he’s a tad expensive but if you're a Ring collectors it's a must have and it's certainly on of the best Gandalfs I have ever seen.
