Mc Farlanes Meets Dorothy, A Match Made In Heaven?
Have you heard the latest Hollywood gossip and the latest buzz? No? Well according to an exclusive from Variety magazine it seems that Todd McFarlane is to produce the latest Oz movie.
Warner Bros are to team up with Village Roadshow Pictures for a new modern version of the Wizard of Oz books, there are 15 of them, by L Frank Baum.
The project is said to be based on an idea from Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn and founder of McFarlane Toys.
But it will come as no surprise to most of McFarlanes legion of fans as we've already had a glimpse into McFarlane's take on the Land of Oz and Dorothy in particular.
If you haven't yet seen McFarlanes vision of Oz then look no further. In 2000 McFarlanes released a Twisted Land of Oz series of figures which were a truly warped vision on the Oz characters.
Even Dorothy wasn't spared any blushes as she was transformed from an innocent, shy girl next door, into an outrageous, gorgeous, sexy bondage queen complete with chains and whip and a few munchkins.
Todd McFarlane will be producing the movie with Thunder Road's Basil Lwanyk, Josh Olson (A History of Violence) writing the script and Rick Benattar as exec producer.
Olson is quoted as saying "I saw those toys (Twisted Land of Oz) and Dorothy as some bondage queen isn't something I want to do. The appealing things about the Baum books to me is how wildly imaginative they are. There are crazy characters from amazing places. I want this to be Harry Potter dark, not Seven dark."
It seems that both Todd and Josh are in agreement here.
Todd on his part has stated that "My pitch was 'How do we get people who went to see Lord of the Rings to embrace this?' I want to create (an interpretion) that has a 2007 Wow factor. You've still got Dorothy trapped in an odd place but she's much closer to the Ripley from 'Alien' than a helpless singing girl."
McFarlanes recently announced that they would be releasing a 12 inch version of the Twisted Land of Oz Dorothy figure to speciality hobby stores with a special Limited Edition Skirtless Collectors Edition which will only be available through the online Collectors Club.
Both versions are due to be released in Sept, 2007.
I think not.
Considering Variety's revelations about Warner Bros upcoming project and the buzz currently surrounding it.
McFarlane is a shrewd, and a clever businessman to boot.
Remember, this is the man who tried to get the license to produce Major League baseball figures for years but couldn't even get them to open his mail.
So what did he do?
He bought Barry Bonds record home run ball for $3 million dollars, and guess what?
The powers that be suddenly sat up and took notice of him and sure enough before long his company wasn't only producing Major League Baseball figures but now produce fully licensed merchandise for all America's top four major sports.
This sexy and seductive Dorothy figure measures 12 1/4 inches from head to toe with articulation at the neck and has a keychain around her neck.
The specialty stores version of the figure will come with a removable skirt whereas the Collectors Edition figure will NOT have a skirt.
There are two Munchkins with Dorothy articulated at the shoulders. The prone Munchkin measures 3 1/2 inches to the top of his head and the Munchkin on his back measures 51/2 inches.
The figure comes complete with an 8 7/8 inch diameter custom base with the "Twisted Land of Oz" logo.
Truly awesome and highly recommended.
