  • McFarlane NHL Series 20 Daniel Briere
  • In 1996, the Phoenix Coyotes' fans stood up and cheered when their team drafted French-Canadian-born hockey phenom Daniel Briere with the 24th overall pick.

Much like we see with baseball, Briere spent the next few years in the minor leagues, earning his playing time the hard way.

He finally became a regular player for the Coyotes in 2000, but his tenure only lasted two years, and he was traded to the Sabres. Now with the Philadelphia Flyers, Briere is proving to be one of the game's top centres.

His big contract was signed with bigger hopes. As the worst team in the 2006 season, the Flyers hoped that Briere could help reverse the losing trend in Philly.

The 8-year $52-million contract aside, Briere is a working-class player who stops at nothing to impact the game in any way, shape or form. The league's highest paid player put forth a valiant effort during the 2007 season, scoring his third career hat trick and helping the Flyers to an eventual playoff berth.

Though Briere's size has always been criticized, he trains harder than any player out there, and it shows up constantly in his game play. His workman attitude is no doubt the main reason he was selected to his first NHL All-Star Game in 2007.

The Flyers earned a 6th seed spot in the Eastern Conference playoff bracket and faced off against the Washington Capitols in the first round. With the help of Briere, the Flyers won the series in dramatic fashion with an overtime win in game seven.

They next faced a heavily-favored Montreal team in the second round. Briere played inspired hockey as his Flyers defeated Montreal in only five games.

Unfortunately, the Flyers lost to Pittsburgh the next round in five games.

  • McFarlane NHL Series 20 Jarome Iginla
  • Jarome Iginla's full name is Jarome Arthur-Leigh Adekunie Tig Junior Elvis Iginla was born on July 1, 1977 in Edmington, Alberta, Canada.

His parents seperated when he was still a baby and he was brought up by his mother and grandparents.

Initially his first love was baseball and he played as a catcher on the Canadian National Junior Team as well as the St Albert Minor Hockey Asssociation.

He was drated by the Dallas Stars in the 1995 NHL Entry Drat 11th overall before being traded to the Calgary Flames where he has stayed.

His first two seasons he played as a goal tender before switching to right wing where he developed the ability to score goals.

After becoming a key player in the 2002 Gold Medal winning Canadian Olylmpic team and a sensational season became a superstar and a fan favorite.

The following season, 2003, he becme the Flames captain.

He is highly regarded in the NHL and is widely thought of as being one of the best players in the NHL today.

He has a mean streak, a power wrist shot, a proven leader and is not afraid of meeting challenges.

  • McFarlane NHL Series 20 Jonathan Cheechoo
  • With a jersey that reads more like a sneeze than a name, the onomatopoeia-pun player, Jonathan Cheechoo, does a little more than make your nose tickle.

His swift skates, strong stroke, and superior strength are an assault on the senses. And in combination, his attributes work to make him the San Jose Sharks' premier right winger.

It goes without saying that the NHL requires another level of toughness that goes above and beyond your average barroom brawler.

What fans admire about Cheechoo is he brings the mentality of a slugger to the ice, but also has the talent to do more than flop around. He is the Sharks' record holder for goals in a season (56), power play goals in a season (24), and hat tricks in a season (5). And in the 2007-2008 NHL season, Cheechoo attempted to add to his growing fame.

San Jose started off the season with a new look. They traded in the team log for something more fitting of the Rbk EDGE jersey. But they kept some of the same faces, including their star right wing Cheechoo.

The team rallied around Cheechoo and a few new additions and got off to a fast start. They went an entire month without a regulation loss, and captured their third division title by accumulating a franchise-record 108 points, second in the NHL to the Detroit Red Wings.

With a lot of talent and determination, Cheechoo and the Sharks went on to defeat the Calgary Flames 4 games to 3 in the first round of the playoffs. They advanced to play the Dallas Stars in the next round.

Regrettably, Cheechoo's talent wasn't enough to save the San Jose favorites. The Sharks found themselves dead in the water, and lost a game 6 that lasted 4 overtime periods.

Cheechoo will be back and ready to go for the 2008-2009 season, and the Sharks have the upmost confidence in their star player.

  • McFarlane NHL Series 20 Nicklas Lidstrom
  • There's a very long list of prerequisites for what exactly makes a champion. And in the NHL, that list is longer than any other sport.

You need the intangibles, obviously, like talent and cohesiveness. But let us not forget Rudy Tomjanovich and his rally-cry of "Heart."

You need players who are not only talented, but have the will, drive and desire to compete night in and night out.

That's where Nicklas Lidstrom comes in. As the Detroit Red Wings' star Defenseman, Lidstrom was instrumental in the Red Wings' Stanley Cup Champion last season.

The 2007 season started where the '06 season left off for Lidstrom. A player dead-set on excellence, Lidstrom registered two assists in a game against Edmonton and became the second-highest Swedish-born NHL player ever by passing Peter Forsberg.

Lidstrom works harder than any player on the ice, and repeatedly comes up big in pressure situations.

This is undoubtedly the reason that he's the Red Wings' captain.

The Detroit squad easily clinched the Western Conference Central division with a record of 54-21-7. And with the help of Lindstrom, the Red Wings carried that momentum into the playoffs.

Entering the playoff pool as winners of the Presidents' Trophy, the Red Wings faced off against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals. Lindstrom led a determined team as they persevered against a very good Penguins squad in six games. With the victory, Lidstrom became the first-ever Euro-born captain to win the Stanley Cup.

  • McFarlane NHL Series 20 Vesa Toskala
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs are one of the most popular franchises in professional hockey's fading lineup. With a long and storied tenure, the Maple Leafs constantly attract fans to their venue, yet habitually play mediocre hockey.

However, that was subject to change in 2007 when the San Jose Sharks' manager Doug Wilson traded Vesa Toskala to the Maple Leafs for a 1st, 2nd, and 4th round draft pick in 2009.

The Maple Leafs immediately signed Toskala to a four-year deal worth a reported 16-million.Toskala was one of the game's toughest goaltenders.

With the Sharks, he had a reputation for being as mean and nasty as any other player on the ice. But once he was traded to the Leafs, Toskala's performance slightly suffered, and he found himself sharing starts with Andrew Raycroft for the position.

In late November, however, Toskala's GAA and save percentage dramatically improved, and by the end of December, he had recorded two shutouts, was named NHL goaltender of the month, and won the Leafs' starting job.

With Toskala and a revamped supporting cast, the Toronto Maple Leafs made a good showing and finished the season with a record of 36-35-11.

Though they missed the playoffs, the Maple Leafs are confident that Toskala's goalie abilities can help them in the years to come.

Toskala's 3 shutouts in only 31 starts gives a breath of hope of a bereft Toronto team.

  • McFarlane NHL Series 20 Daniel Sedin
  • Professional hockey is usually the "lesser" sport in every country outside of Canada.

The media doesn't hype the contests and promoters won't promote. However, this doesn't deter legions of kids all over the world from aspiring to be hockey players.

This especially rings true for the Vancouver Canucks' Swedish-born superstar Daniel Sedin. It's rare to see a hockey player drafted by a team and actually playing there professionally, but Sedin is a wonderful exception.

A NHL standout since 2000, Sedin gallantly attempted to show the world just how bright his star shines in the 2007-2008 NHL season.

After a breakout performance the previous year, Sedin would have to do a lot to match the high expectations set - much less exceed them.

But an undeterred Sedin did what he does best: play hockey.

The Canucks aren't known for being one of the best teams in the NHL, but along with Sedin, they're constantly contenders and always dangerous.

However, due to a string of bad luck, missed plays, and all-around lack of effort from a supporting cast, Sedin and the Canucks missed the playoffs in the 07-08 season.

Now in the last year of his three-year, 10.75-million dollar contract, Sedin is playing for his future - as well as the team's future.

After a playoff berth and Olympic Gold Medal in 2006, the 2007 season was a huge letdown for Sedin. The Canucks finished the NHL season in last place in the Western Conference Northwest Division with a record of 39-33-10.

However, as the 2008 season starts, Sedin and the Canucks are very optimistic.

  • McFarlane NHL Series 20 Dion Phanuef
  • In the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, the Calgary Flames drafted a monstrosity of a young man with the 9th overall pick. Dion Phaneuf was a 19-year-old kid who stood 6-foot-3 and weighed 200 pounds.

He was a young giant, and a big build for hockey - even a defenseman.

He finished his stint with the minor leagues in 2005 and joined the Flames. And in the 2006-2007 season, Phanuef started to show the makings of a superstar.

This hard-hitting, even-keeled young man has captured an expansive fan base. And he was an instrumental part of Canada's success as he played picturesque hockey en route to the Canadian's IIHF World Championship gold medal in Moscow.

With the Flames in '07, Phaneuf introduced everyone to the glass.

He was voted as the NHL's hardest hitter in an informal poll of 141 NHL players conducted by ESPN. Phaneuf was also a strong spoke in the Flames' wheel as they played well beyond their means for the entire season. With only a few notable players sprinkled through Calgary's lineup, Phaneuf helped the depleted Flames to a Western Conference playoff berth.

True to his hard-hitting nature, Phaneuf exploded on opposing players the entire season. This is a trend he hoped would continue in the playoffs as the Flames were set to play the Red Wings in the first round.

Although the Flames put up a good fight, the Red Wings would eventually better the Flames in six games.

The loss was blamed on a host of things, including bad coaching, overzealous players who couldn’t stop slashing, and an overall lack of effort.

But in reality, the Red Wings proved to be the best team in the NHL, as they went on to win the Stanley Cup.

At only 23 years of age, Dion Phaneuf has a lot of hockey left in him. The seasons to come should be exciting for fans and fearful for Phaneuf's opponents.
